'Frustration won't get the better of Vettel'

Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner remains confident that Sebastian Vettel will continue to 'work hard' to improve his results in what has been a difficult season for the German so far.

The four-time reigning champion was forced to retire from Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix while running in third place due to a malfunction of the turbo in his Renault power unit.

Vettel was particularly downbeat after the result, saying after the race that "it's always something different going wrong."

Horner, though, believes Vettel will turn his season around despite his seemingly luckless run of results which has seen him finish on the podium only once in six racces this year.

"Obviously this weekend was pretty tough on him and he is doing nothing wrong," Horner told Autosport.

"He is smart enough to recognise that.

"Like any sportsman he is going to be frustrated when things go wrong but with time to get breath, and reflect, he will just keep working away at it.

"It is the nature of who he is. He will keep his head down and keep working harder and harder."

While Vettel's race was a source of disappointment for both the driver and the team, Horner added that Daniel Ricciardo's late challenge for second position showed that the Australian has the pace to challenge at the front of the grid.

"I think we set out to do our best race and once Dan was in clear air, after Kimi [Raikkonen] had picked up his puncture with [Max] Chilton on the endplate, we were able to run our own race," Horner added.

"And rather than go bananas as it looked like the Mercedes guys were pushing each other incredibly hard, we thought let's just run our fastest race.

"So we built up and up and up and, in the last 20 laps really, started to push. Daniel had tremendous pace at that point of the race and was able to close Lewis down.

"But unfortunately around here you are never realistically likely to overtake unless the driver ahead makes a mistake."
