Alonso inspired by Red Bull success

Wednesday 11-June-2014 14:31

After Daniel Ricciardo's surprising victory in Canada last week, Fernando Alonso believes Ferrari are capable of a similar result at some point this season.

So far this year, Alonso have only managed one podium position with a Ferrari F14 T that is down on pace to its rivals and is difficult to handle.

Nevertheless, the two-time World Champion finished a "lucky" sixth in Montreal - albeit only after a succession of retirements in front of him.

With Ricciardo's victory in mind, Alonso hasn't ruled out Ferrari's chance of claiming a victory under similar circumstances this year.

"Like we've seen in Canada, anything can happen," Alonso told Autosport when asked about what he thinks Ferrari's chances are this year.

"Who would've thought Red Bull would win a race so soon after winter testing?

"Mercedes was so dominant, but they had mechanical issues, so you need to be there to take the opportunities and Red Bull was there.

"That gives us motivation and shows us how things can change during a race weekend - it can be the weather, safety car, many different factors.

"Can we win a race this year? Yes, anything can happen."
