'Double points could decide title'

Thursday 12-June-2014 10:31

Formula 1's new double-points rule could play into Lewis Hamilton's hands after the Brit lost ground to Nico Rosberg in Canada.

In what is proving to be a closely contested battle between the Mercedes drivers for the World title, Hamilton's chances suffered a blow in Montreal.

Brake failure meant the 2008 Champion failed to finish the grand prix while Rosberg, the most consistent driver on the grid, brought his W05 home in second place.

The result meant that Rosberg, who has yet to finish lower than second this season, extended his lead in the Championship to 22 points over his British team-mate.

However, Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff is confident that hasn't brought an end to Hamilton's title challenge.

Asked whether the 29-year-old's title chances were 'now in danger', Wolff told Autosport: "No, I wouldn't say that.

"How many races are we into the season? Seven. So we have another 13 because we have double points."

The double points he spoke of relate to the season finale in Abu Dhabi and the new regulation that will see double points awarded for the race.

Pressed as to whether that could save Hamilton's season, the Austrian added: "It could. But I have no doubt that first of all we have to be careful about talking of an easy home run now.

"You can see Red Bull scored massive points in Canada and you can lose that gap pretty quickly.

"But I guess between the two of them [Rosberg and Hamilton] it will come back to an end of season [decider] with double points."
