Sauber mistakes 'inexcusable'

Sauber says their performance in Austria was "inexcusable" as they not only botched a pitstops but then ordered the wrong car to stop.

A pitiful season for the Swiss team yielded yet another point-less grand prix when neither Esteban Gutierrez nor Adrian Sutil finished inside the top ten.

Gutierrez's efforts were undone when Sauber released him from the pits without his rear right wheel properly attached. The Mexican driver stopped in the pits and was pushed back to his pit box before rejoining the action.

The incident not only cost him in Sunday's race but will also cost him next time out at Silverstone as he was handed a ten-place grid penalty for Sauber's error.

The pitstop bungle was compounded when Sauber mistakenly ordered Adrian Sutil to stop his car instead of Gutierrez.

Realising the error, the German was told to continue but the mistake meant he also lost time.

"What we delivered is inexcusable," said head of track engineering Giampaolo Dall'Ara.

"The mistakes at the pit stop spoiled our race. Procedures were not adhered to. As a result we stopped the wrong car on the track.

"Adrian, who was out on the track, was stopped by a radio communication which was simply a huge mistake."
