'Merc could rule for a long time'

Thursday 26-June-2014 10:59

Former Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali has warned it is important for teams to catch up to Mercedes as soon as possible before the "passion" starts to disappear.

Mercedes have dominated the first eight races and it appears to be a straight battle between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton for the 2014 Drivers' title. To put their dominance in perspective, Hamilton has won four races and Rosberg was victorious in three while the team have claimed six 1-2 finishes.

Domenicali admits Mercedes were always expected to dominate this campaign following the switch to the V6 power units, but he feels it's important for their rivals to close the gap before everyone gets despondent.

"It was clear that the teams that were strong at the beginning would keep that advantage for the season because with such a step change in technology... Mercedes have done a great job and they will keep this advantage for a long time," he said during a Q&A at the FIA's Sport Conference.

"To close the gap in a situation where the regulation is more or less frozen is very difficult. I hope the others will be able to close the gap soon, though, because at this stage you need to have races that are emotionally engaging. If you lose the passion it wouldn't be good."
