Ferrari: Driver line-up won't change

Saturday 05-July-2014 11:55

Ferrari are "very confident" they will retain Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen for next year's Championship.

Although Raikkonen has stated he will "probably" retire from Formula 1 at the end of next year, the Finn is committed to Ferrari for 2015.

The same, though, cannot be said of his team-mate.

Alonso may have a contract in place but the Spaniard has been linked to rivals McLaren due to his mounting frustration over Ferrari's lack of success.

But despite the numerous reports about the double World Champion, team boss Marco Mattiacci is adamant he will remain with the Scuderia next season.

The Italian told BBC Sport: "I have a fantastic couple of drivers and I am very confident they will be with us next year.

"Everybody wants to win more Championships and particularly Ferrari. Both Fernando and Kimi are very demanding and I understand their frustration.

"All the team are not satisfied with where we are. We need to give a better car, performing and competitive.

"At the same time their contribution is very much needed. They can make the team more united so they have a big responsibility and they understand that. There is a very good team spirit."

Mattiacci also vowed not to throw in the towel this season, believing that any lessons learned in 2014 will pay dividends next season.

He added: "Whatever we do this year will be in some way useful for the 2015 car. I want the fans to understand we will go through some tough moments this year but we will come back.

"We are well aware of the issues and issues can be fixed first and foremost from people. I have a very good group of people with whom I want to rebuild this team.

"First you need good people, then to identify the problems. We have done that and we are already working very hard.

"We try to have some continuity from a technical point of view, we try some new directions."
