Jense: The old boy would be very happy

Saturday 05-July-2014 15:42

Jenson Button admits there was a bit of a lump in his throat after he claimed P3 during qualifying at Silverstone.

With McLaren struggling throughout the season, Button and his team-mate Kevin Magnussen were expected to challenge much lower down the order but they got an unexpected lifeline.

After wet conditions earlier in the session, the track dried out and Button managed to get one last flying lap in. That resulted in him getting an unexpected third place behind Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel.

It was made extra special for the 34-year-old as he is paying tribute to his late father John, who died in January, at Silverstone this weekend. Part of the campaign includes wearing a pink helmet and getting others to wear pink.

"It was quite an emotional slowing down lap," the 2009 World Champion said. "Qualifying is qualifying and the race is tomorrow, but when you do a lap you are happy with in front of your home crowd, I think the old boy would be very happy - it would have meant a lot. I have so much support from the fans, it has been overwhelming, a lot of people wearing pink in respect of my old boy. He is definitely smiling down on me."

Rosberg and his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton are expected to challenge for the victory on Sunday and Button insists McLaren won't get carried away after Saturday's events.

"I have made the race easier than previously thought but we have to be realistic," he said. "I want to be upbeat and positive about fighting for a podium, and if it is like today then that is a possibility so long as we make the right calls and strategy, but in a standard dry race it will be very tricky."
