Rosberg: I'm 100% German

Wednesday 09-July-2014 09:06

Well there you have it! Nico Rosberg has cleared any confusion, from Lewis Hamilton at least, about his nationality.

In an attempt to up the pressure ahead of the German Grand Prix, Hamilton raised a few eyebrows when he claimed, probably tongue-in-cheek, that his team-mate "isn't really German".

"To be honest, Nico has never been in Germany, so he's not really German. I remember when we used to race during karting, he never stood next to a German flag - not ever," he said.

The Brit added: "He is German, Finnish, Monégasque or whatever, so he will get that support in Monaco and in Germany he has always had great support there."

Rosberg, though, has downplayed the remarks.

"I was actually there when he said it and I think it was actually the person interviewing who said those questions and Lewis didn't really answer much really," he said.

"What do you want me to say? Everyone can judge however they want."

When asked by Sky Sports News if he considered himself to be as German as Hamilton was British, he replied: "Not really, I didn't grow up in Germany so I guess I am not as British as he is, but I consider myself 100% German."

The next race takes place at Hockenheim in just over a week and Rosberg is hoping he gets plenty of backing from the locals.

"I hope I get a lot of support, but even the British crowd has been great because, yeah, they've supported Lewis but I got all the respect, and that was really nice to see. I could enjoy the great atmosphere they brought to the race track," he said.
