Hakkinen: Kimi retirement talk not smart

Tuesday 15-July-2014 09:32

Mika Hakkinen believes Kimi Raikkonen's decision to announce publicly that he is likely to retire after 2015 was not a "very smart" move.

Just a few years after returning to F1 following a two-year sabbatical, Raikkonen revealed earlier this month that he will "probably" walk away from the sport when his Ferrari contract runs out at the end of next season.

His fellow Finn Hakkinen feels he may have shot himself in the foot.

"Everyone does what they think is right, but in my opinion it was tactically not very smart," he wrote in his latest blog for Hermes.

"When the mechanics and everyone else is aware that a driver plans to retire in a year and half then they pay more attention to the other driver, which in this case is Fernando Alonso.

Two-time World Champion Hakkinen admitted that sometimes it is better to throw in the towel straightaway as you often find yourself less motivated.

He added: "When one thinks of quitting then it has a negative effect on your motivation, then you can no longer concentrate on the things you need to in Formula 1."
