Mercedes non-executive chairman Niki Lauda has apologised to Ferrari for calling the F14 T "s**t".

While his Mercedes team are running away with both the Championships this year, Ferrari and McLaren are struggling and three-time World Champion Lauda didn't hold back in his criticism.

"McLaren have the same engine as us and the car is s**t," he told El Pais over the weekend.

"Where are they? Nowhere.

"Watch the Ferrari: another s**t car.

"Next year will be difference because they can change half the engine."

The 65-year-old Austrian, though, says he has phoned Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo to apologise.

"I apologise to Ferrari, to Luca di Montezemolo and to the Italian fans. I should not have used that word," he told Italy's Gazetta dello Sport.

"I was wrong and I do not make any excuses. I called the President and I explained to him my dismay that this incident should happen at all. It was my fault.

"I have not seen the interview in the Spanish daily, but I was too heavy with my words - forgive me."
