Nico rues Lewis' fiery exit

Saturday 26-July-2014 14:37

Nico Rosberg has lamented yet another qualifying disaster for his team-mate Lewis Hamilton, saying he was hoping for a "gloves-off battle".

The Mercedes driver will start the Hungarian GP first on the grid after claiming his sixth pole position of the 2014 season - and third in a row - at the Hungagoring on Saturday.

That is in stark contrast to his team-mate Hamilton who will start at the back after his car caught fire before he could even set a time in Q1.

"Definitely that's been a pity for the team, not a good thing. We need to keep on working on that," Rosberg said of Hamilton's early exit from qualifying.

"I would prefer to be out there battling with Lewis. That would give me the maximum adrenaline rush. Of course I am very, very happy but it was not a gloves-off battle with Lewis and it takes away a little bit of the happiness.

"Tomorrow is still going to be a long race. A challenging race, especially with the weather coming, so all to play for."

Rosberg, though, had his hands full during Q3 as it started to rain just before the session got underway. He went off track at Turn 1, but managed to keep it together and then he waited until the final few seconds of Q3 to "nail it".

"Yeah Qualy 3 was really a big challenge because the track was changing all the time in the beginning, especially starting the lap with the first set of options," he said.

"I was the first one to arrive at the first corner and it was just difficult to judge how much risk can I take, how late can I brake and it was very, very wet. I manage to avoid crashing. It was just massively difficult down there and unpredictable.

"From then on it was easier and it started drying out again and especially my last lap I really managed to nail it."
