Sauber look to unlock C33's potential

Sauber team principal Monisha Kaltenborn feels her squad need to "get more aggressive" when it comes to developing the C33 in final half of the season.

It has been a disastrous year so far for the Hinwill squad as they are currently experiencing their longest points drought in F1 with Adrian Sutil and Esteban Gutierrez yet to finish in the top 10.

However, there were glimpses of progress before the summer break, but Kaltenborn admits they need to push full steam ahead to extract the car's potential.

"In the development we did, maybe we have to change certain ways of thinking and get more aggressive," she told Autosport.

"Maybe [we need to] have more courage to go in different ways.

"I think there is potential in this car, which we have to unlock by understanding the data better, and understanding our car.

"We clearly have the tools, we have to work on our resources and when that's in place we need more courage to go out and do something else."

Sauber have for several years now enjoyed a technical partnership with Ferrari with the Italian company providing engines for their cars, but Kaltenborn believes her squad would be better off if they actually made more use of their relationship with the Scuderia.

"I think what's different here that maybe puts us more into a role that Williams has historically seen, is that we've always done a lot of things on our own," Kaltenborn explained.

"We don't depend that much on working together with other teams; we do things ourselves.

"And this time we've not taken the right way.

"That's where we have to maybe change our ways of thinking more, because they are historical.

"Maybe with all of the demands and complexities on the car it can make sense to, here and there, co-operate with another team.

"But that's not the most important thing. In our own thinking we have to get more aggressive, towards our car and development.

"That's where we need to have a bit more courage."
