Chilton back in for Rossi at Spa

Friday 22-August-2014 09:36

There is good news for Max Chilton and bad news for Alexander Rossi ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday.

Just a day after Marussia confirmed that Rossi would make his debut at Spa this weekend, the team have now made a U-Turn and announced that Chilton will in fact drive in FP2 on Friday and the rest of the afternoon.

Marussia revealed on Thursday that Rossi would replace due to "contractual issues" and the American, who joined the team from Caterham not long ago, was naturally delighted to be given a chance.

"It goes without saying that I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to race in Formula 1 for the first time and I cannot thank the Marussia F1 Team enough for the faith they are demonstrating in me," he said.

Chilton's PR people, meanwhile, revealed that he "volunteered to step out of his race seat for this weekend's race in Spa, Belgium, to allow the team to attract much needed funds by selling his seat".

However, the Brit will be back in the car from FP2 and will also be in action Saturday and Sunday.

Rossi did get a taste of the action in FP1, but Marussia have already applied for chance in driver for Sunday's race, and the stewards have approved it.

A statement read: "The Stewards, have received a request from Marussia F1 Team to change the nominated driver Alexander Rossi (Car 42) back to their previously nominated driver Max Chilton (Car 4) for the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix.

"In accordance with Article 19 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations the Stewards grant permission for this driver change."
