Rosberg 'very happy' with Belgian pole

Saturday 23-August-2014 14:55

Having clinched his first Belgian GP pole in eight visits, Nico Rosberg says he is "very happy" with the car he has at his disposal.

As Formula 1 returned to action following the summer break, the intra-team Mercedes battle - which Rosberg is leading by 11 points - resumed.

It was Lewis Hamilton, though, who looked to have the advantage heading into Saturday's pole position shoot-out.

The British driver had the better of the running in the proceeding segments but it was Rosberg who came to the fore when it mattered.

Putting in a 2:05.698, he claimed provisional pole and, following a scruffy lap from Hamilton, was set to finish in that position.

He still went onto better his time to a 2:05.591, taking a 0.228s advantage over his team-mate.

It was Rosberg's seventh pole position of this season and came in trying circumstance as the drivers had to contend with a wet Spa circuit.

The Championship leader, though, says he had no complaints with the conditions or his car, which handled the wet track perfectly.

"It is awesome at this track, it is one of the most special tracks of the year," he said.

"It was not quite as difficult out here as some other occasions because the conditions was pretty much always intermediates.

"I am really happy, the car was handling well. Together with my engineers we fine tuned it perfectly and got there in the end.

"It is only qualifying, a long race tomorrow but I am very happy."

Rosberg added that he believes he gained an advantage through the iconic Eau Rouge circuit as he car stuck to the track, allowing him to keep his speed.

"Eau Rouge I was feeling good through it, really going for it and maybe that it where I made my time."
