Rosberg weighs in on team orders

Friday 24-May-2013 12:09

Nico Rosberg admits there could come another time when Mercedes opt to use team orders but that doesn't mean either drivers is number 1 or number 2.

Team orders came to a head in the Malaysian GP when, despite being only round two of the Championship, both Mercedes and Red Bull decided to implement them.

But while Sebastian Vettel blatantly ignored his team to snatch the win from Mark Webber, Nico Rosberg adhered and remained fourth behind Lewis Hamilton.

As to be expected the German was not happy with the situation, especially as it had not been discussed beforehand.

However, he acknowledges that it may not be the one and only time that team orders are used by Mercedes.

"That was a unique situation - a very unexpected one, which we hadn't planned for," he told The Telegraph.

"If you're implying that there is a No 1 and No 2 driver within the team, that is absolutely not the case.

"The same decision would have been taken had it been the other way around. Nobody wants team orders, but there is more to it.

"We are representing Mercedes on the track, massive amounts of money are involved, plus hundreds of people back at the factory.

"Sometimes you have to limit the risk to bring the cars home."
