Massa 'fine' after practice crash

Saturday 25-May-2013 16:03

Felipe Massa says he is "fine" but has some "stiff muscles" after his massive crash in Saturday's final practice in Monaco.

The Ferrari driver lost control of his F138 on the approach to Ste Devote and slammed into the barriers with the left side of the car before hitting the tyre barrier nose first.

Massa walked away gingerly but was given the all-clear when he went to the medical centre minutes later.

And although the Brazilian was okay to continue, he was unable to take part in the day's qualifying session as his Ferrari mechanics run out of time to fix the car.

The good news, though, is that Massa is okay.

"I'm fine, just some stiff muscles here [right shoulder] and around the neck," said Massa.

"When I braked I touched a bump and both wheels went a bit up. When I braked I locked both front wheels. When you lock the front wheels the car doesn't move [steer], so I hit the guardrail on the left.

"It's the worst place to have this kind of problem. I saw that the car was pretty damaged, the suspension and everything around the car was pretty damaged, so I knew it wouldn't be easy to go out. We tried everything we could. Starting last here is not easy."

The bad news, however, is that he faces a mammoth task trying to rescue anything out of his weekend in Sunday's 78-lap Monaco GP.

"I think we have to try everything different, and see if it works. We have the whole evening and tomorrow morning to make a big analysis and try to understand what we will do."
