Alonso: P2 tastes like victory

Sunday 22-September-2013 16:41

His Championship hopes may have taken a heavy blow, but Fernando Alonso left Singapore a happy man after finishing second.

A poor qualifying session meant the Ferrari driver started seventh on the grid, but he made up for it as he was up to P3 after the first lap on Sunday. A good strategy from the team that saw him stop during the deployment of the safety car helped him to finish second behind Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull and with Lotus' Kimi Raikkonen third.

Vettel's victory means he now has a comfortable 60-point lead over Alonso in the standings with only six races left this season.

Alonso admits they were always going to struggle to match the pace of Vettel's Red Bull and is happy with the second place.

"We got a fantastic start," the Spaniard said. "We didn't have the pace, so we had to invent something. With the very good start and different strategy it paid off with a fantastic result. It's like a victory for us.

"[Our strategy] was risky, but we had nothing to lose. Then we took care of the tyres and the car performed well. Finishing second or fifth doesn't matter too much."

Vettel ended up winning the race by over 32s while he also claimed the hat-trick as he was on pole and set the fastest time and Alonso admits Red Bull were just too good over the weekend.

He added: "They were too fast all weekend. We have to congratulate them for a fantastic weekend, and next time we will try to do better."
