Calado: Friday run was amazing

Friday 06-September-2013 14:45

James Calado is dreaming of a future in F1 having taken part in Friday's first practice at Monza.

The 24-year-old Brit was in action for Force India in Friday's opening session and demonstrated some solid pace.

Calado amassed 24 laps with a best time of 1:27.041, which put him 1.476s down on Lewis Hamilton's P1 time. However, more to the point, he was just four-tenths short of team-mate Paul di Resta's best.

"Amazing - that's the only word I can use really, fantastic," Calado said.

"It took quite a while to get used to, to be honest - it's a lot different to the GP2 car - but after a while I was familiar with everything again like I was at Silverstone [Young Driver Test] and was able to drive consistently and do some reasonable lap times actually.

"So I'm really happy; we just used the one set of tyres and I was happy with the way the programme went, that's for sure.

"I learnt a lot actually. It took half a session on the tyres just to get familiar again, to learn the late brake points and things like that but once I got it I was able to again give some good feedback to the team ready for FP2.

"It was quite hard for me though because I have to start on new tyres so when they're at their peak I'm learning, and when I'm ready they've completely gone. So over the session it was quite consistent and I think that was a positive point."

Now, having had a taste of the big time at a grand prix weekend, Calado is hoping Friday's running was just the beginning.

"That's the dream, but I don't have any future plans," he said. "I can only do my best now both in GP2 and the F1 practice. We'll see what happens.

"The ambition is obviously to be a race driver; that's what I've always dreamed of. I'll do my very, very best to try and get there."
