Whitmarsh happy with 'team player' Perez

Things haven't exactly gone according to plan for Sergio Perez since his move to McLaren, but team principal Martin Whitmarsh is nevertheless impressed.

As is the case at the start of every new F1 season, McLaren are expected to be there or thereabouts when it comes to challenging for victories, but that wasn't the case during the first two races.

The team struggled during qualifying and also on race day and Perez, who swapped Sauber for Woking at the start of this season following Lewis Hamilton's departure to Mercedes, has only two points to his name after a P9 in Malaysia.

Despite the struggles with the MP4-28, Perez has knuckled down and got on with the job, much to the delight of his team boss.

"He has done a solid job," said Whitmarsh. "It is easy to get rattled coming to a team like McLaren when you don't have a quick enough car.

"He is an intelligent guy. He is incredibly young but again in my mind he has not put a foot wrong."

He added: "He is a team player. There are a few glimmers of positive things but we haven't started well.

"I am very, very blessed at the moment with the drivers we have got and their attitude and approach, and they are powering through."
