Boullier is team boss and more

Eric Boullier may have been named McLaren's new Racing Director but in truth he says his role is that of team principal.

Walking away from Lotus in the off-season, McLaren announced a week later that Boullier would take the role of McLaren Racing Director.

McLaren's announcement not only signalled the end of Martin Whitmarsh's days as team boss but also the end of the 'Team Principal' title at the Woking team.

Explaining his role, Boullier says it incorporates the team boss and more.

"It is definitely a Team Principal role on track and let's say that off track I have to focus more on the performance of the team," he told Sky Sports.

"Time has changed and moved forward and you cannot have a Team Principal acting in the sole role today.

"I think teams are now getting bigger and you have to share the responsibilities of the organisation to make sure you make the best of it.

"That is what I have been discussing and what Ron [Dennis] wanted to put on the table."

The Frenchman also weighed in on what has been one of the better first half of pre-season testing for the Mercedes-powered McLaren team.

Asked whether the team was 'where you want to be at this stage of testing', he said: "If I say 'Yes' I would be lying as we can never be happy.

"This morning [Thursday], we got stuck in the garage a little bit too long, but we have to say we are happy with the reliability of the car. Obviously we are now looking for more mileage."
