JEV: Alonso prevented a big crash

Jean-Eric Vergne says the stewards were right not to penalise Fernando Alonso in Abu Dhabi as the Spaniard's actions prevented an accident.

Coming out of the pits after his second stop, Alonso found himself alongside Vergne with almost no space between himself and the Toro Rosso.

The Ferrari driver therefore went off track completely, running over the kerbs before rejoining ahead of the Frenchman.

Alonso was investigated for ignore the track limits with the stewards ruling that he "had no choice."

And Vergne has backed up their assessment.

"It was a racing incident and if he had not gone on the outside [of the track] like he did, we would have had a big crash," he told Autosport.

"It was high-speed, and what he did was right. Actually, I am really happy he did that otherwise we would have had an accident, so yes, definitely [the stewards made the right decision]."

"I knew that I might be racing against him but as I didn't see him on the left, I thought he was in front of me. But he was next to me where I could not see him."
