Kvyat: Really good, really positive

Despite only completing 20 laps on Friday, Toro Rosso youngster Daniil Kvyat was very happy with his performance at the Circuit of the Americas.

Having secured his super licence just days prior, the 21-year-old Russian took to the Texan track on Friday as Toro Rosso set about preparing him for next season.

Kvyat completed 20 laps in a shortened first practice and finished just 0.202s behind team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, who is off to Red Bull Racing next season.

"We were running very similar programmes, it was quite a short session, but it is still quite relevant to look at the timesheets and to finish the session just 0.2 off Daniel, who is quite an experienced driver and is really talented, feels really good and really positive," the GP3 Champ told Sky Sports F1.

"I saw some positive things on the data as well."

And one thing he did see was the ability to go even quicker, revealing that he "wasn't on the limit because I was still learning the limits of the car and learning the track as well because it is a completely new track for me."

However, the Russian driver also acknowledged that there are areas he needs to work on with fitness being a top priority.

"I think there is still a little bit of everything, ever driver can improve - even Sebastian Vettel.

"I just have to take it step-by-step. My fitness levels are okay, my level today felt really good, but I wouldn't like to keep going for the rest of the weekend, it is just step-by step."
