Max Verstappen, son of former F1 driver Jos, has been linked with a move to Toro Rosso with Helmut Marko reportedly keen on a deal.
Although Verstappen is only 16 years old, Dutch media reports that Marko is eager to hand the youngster one of the two seats available at STR for the 2015 campaign.
The teenager made his European Formula 3 Championship debut at the start of the season and he has impressed, winning seven races to lie second in the standings behind Esteban Ocon, who is part of the Lotus development programme.
Telesport reports that Marko is a "fan" of Verstappen, who will turn 17 in September, and the Dutch driver could be fast-tracked into F1.
"If you get such an opportunity then you have to consider it," his father Jos said. "I don't think that 17 is too young. Definitely not for Max as he is very mature. It is a good situation that we find ourselves in, but it's also tricky. What is the right decision, and how often do you get such an opportunity?"
Verstappen senior, though, admits there is still a long way to go before they can start talking Max lining up on the F1 grid.
"On such an adventure there are always snags. We know at least what Red Bull wants, but we really have no decision," he said.
