Valsecchi not giving up on F1 dream

Davide Valsecchi still holds out hope that he will find a place on next year's Formula One grid.

Having won the GP2 Championship in 2012, Valsecchi took a full-time role with Lotus as the F1 team's official reserve driver.

However, aside from an outing at the Young Driver Test, his new job has largely kept the 26-year-old out of action.

And now Valsecchi looks set to lose out on the opportunity to make a step up with Lotus.

With the team set to sign either Nico Hulkenberg or Pastor Maldonado as Kimi Raikkonen's replacement, Valsecchi has been forced to look elsewhere for a 2014 seat.

"About the chances of becoming a racing driver next year, I still have a small hope," the Italian ld Autosport.

"The team has to find a substitute for Kimi in 2014 and I am ready for it.

"I won GP2 last year and I think I am one of the best drivers outside of the 22 in F1.

"Maybe there is only [Formula Renault 3.5 Champion Kevin] Magnussen who deserves it like me.

"So maybe an F1 team will call me and I will be happy to talk.

"This year, I am working for a top team but am reserve driver so from a personal point of view I'm not so happy because I would like to race - but I am happy to have this chance and that the team is delivering."

Valsecchi, who has the dubious honour of being the only GP2 Champ not to have raced in F1, concedes things don't always go to plan but would like to see his success Fabio Leimer, who won this year's GP2 crown, make the step up.

"It should be that the Champion of the second division gets an F1 race seat, but in this world this is not the way the story is always written," he said.

"I hope for Leimer that he will have a seat in F1 next year.

"It is not easy to get into the 22 best drivers in the world, but considering some drivers like [Esteban] Gutierrez, [Giedo] van der Garde and [Max] Chilton had the luck to get a place, I hope for Leimer that he will be there - and me as well!"
