Nico Hulkenberg believes it is impossible to say whether he made the right choice in opting to move to Force India instead of Lotus.
Hulkenberg was offered Kimi Raikkonen's seat for the final two races of in 2013 and was the favourite to replace the Finn at the Enstone team at one stage.
However, after Lotus' proposed deal with investors Quantum Motorsports failed to materialize in time, the German decided to return to his former team instead.
Since then, things have gone from bad to worse for Lotus - they were forced to miss the season's first official testing session at Jerez after the debut of their new E22 car was delayed, and team principal Eric Boullier was headhunted by McLaren.
Their woes are illustrated by the betting trends at bookmakers like Paddy Power, where 2013 strugglers McLaren and Williams are expected to finish ahead of Lotus.
Nevertheless, Hulkenberg believes Lotus are still capable of performing well during the year, which would make him rue his decision.
"There is a bit of uncertainty and it is quite an unclear situation at the moment [for Lotus]," Hulkenberg told Autosport.
"But I don't know whether that affects their performance at the moment. That is still to be seen. We will see how it develops for them."
While it is impossible to say how the season will pan out after a single test, Hulkenberg added that he is impressed by what he saw in Jerez of a Force India outfit that are strong outside bets to finish in the top six this year.
"I think the team has grown," he continued
"You can see when I came back to the factory first, the infrastructure has changed.
"There are more people as well and the team is growing, so it is a good signal."
