Maldonado happy with 'first normal day'

Having finished at the top of the timesheets in Barcelona, Pastor Maldonado reckons that a sign of what Lotus can do on a "normal day."

This year has been anything but normal for Lotus as the Enstone team has been plagued by reliability issues.

Taking small steps throughout the opening five races, Lotus finally netted their first points of the Championship last Sunday in Spain when Romain Grosjean brought his car home in eighth place.

Those steps forward continued at the Barcelona circuit this week when the team took part in a two-day test that culminated with a P1 for Maldonado.

The Venezuelan driver put aside his Spanish GP woes to post a 1:24.871, which put him almost a full second up on second-placed Nico Rosberg.

"That was a complete day for us and my first normal day of testing this season," said Maldonado, who covered 102 laps.

"We didn't have any problems and we gained a lot of good running with good track conditions compared to yesterday's. We ran to plan and completed everything we wanted to do."

He added: "We learnt a lot more about the car, the set-up and performance is improving all the time so I'm feeling more comfortable to push too.

"It's been a big step forward which hopefully means we'll be much better for the rest of the season."

Meanwhile, trackside operations director Alan Permane was pleased to see the potential of the E22.

"We completed everything we set out to do including aero assessments, mapping work, energy recovery scenarios, evaluations of set-up and ride height, tyre usage programmes and so on and I'm pleased to say the E22 didn't miss a beat," he stated.

"We completed over 100 laps so it's been very good to see what is possible when we have good reliability. With the data we have collected over the last two days and the progress we've made, we're in much better shape heading to the next races.

"There is plenty of potential in the E22."
