Williams: Not a flash in the pan

Claire Williams is confident her team's 'best of the rest' display in Austrian will not be a one-off showing.

Williams took the fight to Mercedes in Saturday's qualifying at the Red Bull Ring as the team locked out the front of the grid.

And although unable to hold those positions through to the chequered flag on Sunday, Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa finished third and fourth, a result that saw Williams move up to third favourites to win the Constructors' title at Paddy Power.

The result was a marked improvement for Williams who have struggled in recent years.

Scoring 27 points on Sunday, Williams are now fifth in the Constructors' Championship on 85 points. Last year they scored just five.

Speaking to Press Association Sport, deputy team principal Williams said: "We said before the start of the race the opportunity to win probably wasn't there.

"So to come home third and fourth behind a Mercedes team in a class of their own at the moment was the objective, we met it, and we're really happy with that. It's been an amazing weekend for the team.

"And this is certainly not a flash in the pan, so the aim now is to maintain this level of consistency, this level of points scoring, and there is no reason why we can't do that.

"The car has the pace, we've shown that consistently throughout the previous races, but we've had a bit of bad luck and sometimes we've not made the best calls.

"But now we've achieved this, the realistic aim is to keep making up positions in the Constructors' Championship and I think we can do that - I hope we can do that.

While the Grove outfit might not be expected to challenge Mercedes over the course of the season, Sunday's result certainly spices up the battle for the minor places in the Championship.

"It's about consistent points scoring, scoring big points as well, with more podium appearances. That has to be the goal for us," Williams added.
