Alonso: If I can't, let it be Button

Fernando Alonso had no complaints with his qualifying in Belgium as he lines up ahead of all but one of his Championship rivals.

The Championship leader, the only triple winner in this year's campaign, arrived at Spa this weekend with a 40-point advantage in the standings over Mark Webber.

The Aussie is by no means Alonso's only rival for the crown as Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen all have a good chance of winning.

However, none of his four rivals excluding Raikkonen had a great day out on track as while Alonso is sixth on the grid, Hamilton is behind him in seventh, Vettel is 10th and Webber will line up P12 after incurring a gearbox penalty.

"I'm happy," said Alonso.

"I think sixth is more or less our position in the whole Championship, I think 6.3 or something like that average. So no surprises again.

"The only good thing for us today is it's not Vettel on pole or it's not Hamilton on pole, so the title contenders they are behind us, only Kimi in fourth position.

"So it has been a good Saturday, but we need to finish this job.

"Obviously for us from a Championship point of view if we finish like this, it will be great."

Alonso admits he's expecting a stronger showing from his rivals come Sunday's 44-lap Belgian GP, however, he is hoping that if can't win the race then pole-sitter Jenson Button - who he doesn't believe is a threat - will.

"They will be strong in the race, but it seems Jenson is doing great in this race, and if we cannot win obviously it's better if someone that's a little bit more far behind wins, and Jenson is quite a strong candidate tomorrow."
