Alonso: Second tastes like a win

Fernando Alonso may have lost more ground to Sebastian Vettel in the title race but says he has only reasons to celebrate his runner-up result in Canada.

Starting sixth on the grid after his F138 lacked pace in the cold and wet on Saturday, the Ferrari driver soon began to make up positions in the dry on Sunday.

Once again demonstrating that Ferrari's race pace tops their short-distance pace, Alonso worked his way up to second, finishing 14.4s behind Vettel.

"Yesterday we didn't have a good qualifying. I didn't get a fast lap and the conditions were not easy," said the Spaniard.

"But we knew the pace in dry conditions was good. We had high hopes."

The double World Champ's hopes were realised as he first battled with Nico Rosberg and Mark Webber before chasing down Lewis Hamilton in the closing laps.

He took the Mercedes driver with seven to go and raced his way to second in the Championship.

"I was fighting top drivers and I had very good fights with Mark, Nico and Lewis at the end. It was not easy because they are super-talented.

"But I think second tastes of victory, because we scored some good points after a very difficult weekend."

After seven races Alonso, who has two race wins to his tally, is on 96 points, 38 behind Vettel.

The Ferrari driver, though, isn't panicking.

"When we are 85 points behind that will be a critical situation. In the last six years people have been recovering 30-40 points [deficits]."

Turning his attention to the next race, the British GP, Alonso says Ferrari have what it takes to challenge the Bulls.

"At the next race we need to be good over the whole weekend, I think our race pace is very similar to Red Bull's except on the first lap when they are faster but Silverstone is very demanding on tyres and hopefully we can be competitive."
