Button happy to ride his luck

Sunday 08-June-2014 21:52

Jenson Button was the first to admit that he got a bit lucky in Canada, but he was nevertheless pleased with the progress that McLaren have made.

Having started ninth on the grid in Montreal, Button appeared to be set for a scrap for eighth place at best but he kept plugging away all afternoon and managed to get ahead of both Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and Force India's Nico Hulkenberg on the final few laps to move into P6.

When Sergio Perez and Felipe Massa made contact and went crashing into the barriers on the penultimate lap, Button inherited fourth place, his best finish of the season.

"If you got caught in traffic it was difficult to overtake but I fought my way through in the end," Button said.

"The incident with Sergio and Felipe you don't want to see but they are okay which is good and I had that little dice with Fernando and Hulkenberg and went down the inside of both of them. It was a fun race and some reasonable points.

"In a straightforward race we wouldn't have finished fourth but I feel we are making progress with the car and the team should be happy."
