Alonso: An unbelievable result

Sunday 25-March-2012 12:37

Fernando Alonso feels his Malaysian GP victory will live long in the memory of Ferrari fans but that it "doesn't change" the fact that the team is struggling.

The Spaniard put Ferrari's pre-season and qualifying woes to one side on Sunday as he came from eighth place on the grid to claim victory in the rain-affected race.

It was a superb drive from the double World Champion as he first made the most of the some quick work from the Ferrari pit crew to get ahead of pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton and then held off the impressive Sergio Perez during the latter stages of the race.

The 30-year-old Alonso hailed the result as "unbelievable" as no one gave them a chance of victory before the lights went out in Sepang.

"A big surprise today the win. We were not competitive in Australia or here," he said.

"Our goal was to score as many points as possible. An unbelievable result, a great job from the team. We maximised the potential in our hands.

"Keeping calm in some strange conditions at the begin with inters and the switching to dry tyres. The team deserve this win. It's a tough time for us at the moment but this is a Sunday we will remember."

Despite his victory, Alonso is refusing to get carried away as he knows Ferrari need to improve further if they want to stay in front.

"I think [the win] changes nothing. We are in a position that we don't want. We don't want to be fighting to go into Q3 and for points," he said.

"The goal was not to lose many points. We did the job trackside. So this is a positive news but coming to China, Bahrain and China there is a lot of stuff coming to the car and this is the real job to do.

"We are very united and this win will make us very happy. But it doesn't change our determination to improve the car and to keep winning."
