Alonso: No reason not to be optimistic

Saturday 23-March-2013 09:50

Fernando Alonso concedes Ferrari are not entirely certain about their race-pace in Malaysia but, based on Australia, reckon they have what it takes.

With tyre degradation proving to be on the high side at the Sepang circuit, several teams are concerned about how their cars will perform on the Pirelli come Sunday's grand prix.

However, there was no sign of that degradation during Saturday's qualifying when Alonso put his F138 up into third place.

The double World Champion, who won last year's Malaysian GP, qualified behind Sebastian Vettel and his own Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa.

"We will try to do a good race and try and score as many points as possible," said the Spaniard.

"We are not sure about the performance of the car [in terms of] race pace. Every run we do is inconsistent. We need to see how the race goes.

"We have not had big problems during the long runs on Friday.

"In Melbourne, the race pace was okay so there is no reason not to be optimistic tomorrow."

Alonso heads into Sunday's grand prix second in the Championship having finished runner-up to Kimi Raikkonen in Australia.
