Vijay Mallya believes that Force India possessed the speed to challenge Mercedes at Sepang before their weekend went horribly wrong.
The team suffered a double DNF after both Adrian Sutil and Paul di Resta were forced to retire for safety reasons as a result of a wheel nut issue which had plagued them throughout their pitstops.
"It's more than deep disappointment. It's extreme disappointment," team boss Mallya is quoted as saying by Autosport.
"The cars were quick, very competitive: we were racing Mercedes very comfortably, [were] much quicker than the McLarens, quicker than Lotus I would like to believe.
"So it was really looking good until the wheelnut failed."
A disappointed di Resta tried to look for some kind of silver lining.
"The good news is that we have the performance in the car, but this is definitely a missed opportunity because we had the potential to score a lot of points," said the Scot.
"We will go away, take this on the chin, and come back fighting in China."
