Hamilton: I really dislike going backwards

Sunday 27-May-2012 15:49

Lewis Hamilton concedes his Monaco GP was "not the best" as instead of working his way forwards, he fell backwards despite not being overtaken on track.

Hamilton had been lapping in third place behind Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg when he came in for his one and only stop of the afternoon, emerging back in line behind the duo.

One lap later Fernando Alonso came in for his stop and managed to leapfrog Hamilton in the order.

There was more of the same when Sebastian Vettel, the very last man to pit, put on fresh rubber and came out metres in front of Hamilton.

The McLaren driver was not able to fight back as it is notoriously difficult to overtake on the streets of Monte Carlo.

"It was not the best result, but this is motor racing," Hamilton told the BBC.

"I really dislike going backwards, but we still go away with some points. There are many races ahead of us and we still need to keep pushing."

The Brit's efforts were undone a bit by his start, which he rated as "one of the worst" after he failed to attack the leading duo even though he was third on the grid.

"My start was one of worst starts I've had in a long time," he said.

"I don't understand why it happens when two guys next to be and those behind us got perfect starts. I was fortunate not to get caught up in the crash.

"We do thousands of starts, it shouldn't be a problem."

The start, though, was not Hamilton's only issue as the McLaren driver was heard telling his team over the radio that "someone's dropping something from the pit wall" and that it "hits me on the head."

Explaining after the race exactly what kept falling on his head, the Brit said: "The guys hold the pit boards over the track and two or three slips fell out and hit me in the front of the helmet.

"I was like 'guys this is getting ridiculous' as they kept dropping them and dropping them."
