Webber: No surprises

Thursday 23-May-2013 16:36

Mark Webber had no complaints about his running on Thursday in Monaco despite finishing 0.645s down on Nico Rosberg.

The Red Bulls lacked the pace in free practice to run with the Mercedes and Ferrari drivers at the very front of the field.

Webber, though, found some pace on his supersoft Pirelli run to put him up to fifth place, 0.645s off the pace.

"I think traditionally if you see us on Thursdays we're never too electric so it was one of our better Thursdays of the past few years to be honest," said the Red Bull racer.

"But you've still got to be very, very focused, concentration is very high, it's a challenging venue to pull everything together.

"We want to obviously get short run performance then wanted to get short run data and long run data which I think we both got.

"There are some quick cars out there, but no surprises.

"We've seen that on Saturday in the last few grandx prix. There are quick guys but all in all it was a smooth day for us."

Asked if he thought Mercedes could be beaten to pole position, the Aussie said: "A 14.7 is not hanging around, but let's see how things go.

"Last year we were not really in the window [for pole] until the last lap in Q3, so I need to discover that again if I can."

He added: "You need to be towards the front here."
