Alonso: Ferrari can fight for the title

Sunday 12-May-2013 15:49

Fernando Alonso believes Ferrari demonstrated in Spain that they can compete for the Championship having taken a commanding victory.

Lining up on the grid in front of his home fans, Alonso was quickly up to third, putting in a phenomenal pass on Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen in one swoop.

Pitting early, the Spaniard made up another position when he moved ahead of Sebastian Vettel while, with the help of DRS, he easily picked off Nico Rosberg.

From there the grand prix was Alonso's to lose and he slowly etched out a lead that was only ever relinquished as the pit stops played out.

After 66 laps Alonso crossed the line in first place, taking his second win at the Barcelona circuit and his second of this season but by far the most emotional.

"It was fantastically emotional and the fans really helped because you feel the support from everyone," said the 31-year-old, who waved the Spanish flag with pride as he brought his car to parc ferme after crossing the line.

"Every single member of the team took care of every detail because we want to do well in front of our fans and so many people supporting Ferrari.

"We did it and we're happy for that but we don't want to stop here obviously."

The double World Champion is hoping to build on his Spanish GP win having climbed to third in the Drivers' Championship.

With Sebastian Vettel finishing fourth, the gap between the two is down to 17 points.

Alonso, though, knows that the hard work cannot stop.

"Nothing really changes. We've only had five races and we've had ups and downs.

"Some races we have had a good race with no problems, and we more or less finished all of them on the podium.

"At some races we have had mistakes and mechanical problems that we don't want to repeat, but we know we have the car to fight with the top and we can fight for the Championship.

"If we do a good enough job we can fight and that's what we will aim to do."
