Alonso insists tactics were 'perfect'

Fernando Alonso insists there was nothing wrong with Ferrari's tactics in Saturday's qualifying despite initially appearing to be very unhappy with the team.

Having practiced towing down the Monza straights in final practice on Saturday morning, Ferrari looked to use that in the all-important qualifying shoot-out for the Italian Grand Prix.

The plans, though, did not appear to work well as Felipe Massa, who was the lead car, pulled away from his team-mate.

Alonso was heard over the radio yelling "Massa is too far away!"

But, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, he didn't stop there as the Italian publication reports him as also having said "you're really idiots, mamma mia guys."

But whatever was said during the session, Alonso, who qualified fifth behind his team-mate, later insisted he was happy.

"It was perfect," he told Autosport. "We planned to have [Massa] a little bit in front and he was helping me out on the straights.

"An extra tenth or something was thanks to him."

The double World Champion was even pleased with Ferrari's performance in qualifying after struggling in the rain at Spa.

"It was a very good qualifying for us.

"We were fighting with the top guys, finally, after some qualifying sessions where we were not so good.

"We had a good feeling at Spa as well but then the rain came and it was not so good in Q3.

"Today we were better and we qualified at the front."

As for the radio messages, the double World Champion says only bits were played giving out the wrong impression.

"I said in the radio that Felipe was a bit too far now if we want to do this, so they slowed him down a bit and we started the last attempt at the same distance as always," said Alonso.

"They didn't put out the last radio message, when I said thank you to Felipe and thank you to the team, and that it was perfect in the end."
