Title challenge over in July - Alonso

Fernando Alonso admitted that he knew he wouldn't be able to prevent Sebastian Vettel from recording a fourth successive Drivers' Championship as early as July this year.

The two-time World Champion finished second in the standings, but hasn't won a race since the Spanish Grand Prix and heads into the final race of the season a massive 145 points - almost six race victories - behind the German ace.

When the Spaniard was asked at Interlagos on Thursday at what point he felt that Red Bull and Vettel were untouchable, he said:

"Germany or Hungary. In July we were too far behind in terms of competitiveness.

"At Silverstone, we had planned to have a big update and it didn't work - we fell behind Red Bull. In Germany and Hungary we weren't competitive at all, and kept on losing points. We went into the August break thinking we needed a very big step if we were to fight for the championship, and inside we knew it was getting very, very difficult.

We have to do better [in 2014] if we want to fight for the championship because we were not good enough compared to Red Bull."
