'The problem Ferrari or Alonso?'

Bernie Ecclestone says Ferrari need to inspire belief in Fernando Alonso otherwise the Spaniard could lose his enthusiasm.

For the third time in four seasons with the Scuderia, Alonso had to be content with runner-up in this year's Championship while once again Sebastian Vettel had the glory.

While the Red Bull racer dominated the latter half the season, winning nine races in a row to bring his tally to 13 for the season, Alonso only managed two races wins, the last of which was back in May's Spanish Grand Prix.

In an interview this week with Spain's Marca, Ecclestone said: "People think the name Ferrari is enough to win, but... I don't know if the problem is Ferrari or Alonso.

"I hope he hasn't lost any of the enthusiasm he had. The problem is if he doesn't believe the team can give him the car he wants, he'll lose his enthusiasm."

Asked to compare the double World Champion to Red Bull's Vettel, the F1 suprmeo explained: "They are different. Different as drivers and as people, so you can't compare them.

"It depends which one you like. I like Alonso a lot and I like Vettel. Sebastian is closest to the people."

Ecclestone, though, hopes that Formula One has not seen the last of Alonso's title-winning seasons.

"Fernando is a winner, I want to see him win," he added. "I hoped he would win the title this year, to be honest."
