Bourdais fears qualy could be his undoing

Monday 3rd March 2008

F1 rookie Sebastien Bourdais conceded that qualifying could prove to be his downfall at the start of his F1 career.

Bourdais, who will be racing for Toro Rosso in his first season in F1, has a great deal of motorsport experience behind him, having won four consecutive Champ Car Championships.

And although he reckons his past racing experience will help him during grands prix, he admits qualifying could be a lot harder.

"You need to qualify well, and I think that's my weakness right now," Bourdais told Autosport. "On long runs I'm quite competitive. On first lap performance it's a bit harder."

The Frenchman, though, has been practicing qualifying simulations during Toro Rosso's recent tests. "The qualifying simulation itself was quite reasonable last time we were here," he said.

"But we'll see. I need to learn everything, so we'll just take it as it comes."

But despites his concerns over qualifying, Bourdais is eagerly awaiting his F1 grand prix debut. "I'm not confident, but I'm not un-confident," Bourdais said.

"I'm usually quite flat with my emotions - I just get to a place and try to enjoy myself and do the best I can.

"As far as I'm concerned, I've been in the business for quite some time but I'm a rookie here, so I need to learn a lot of things.

"I don't really know exactly what to expect, but it's not worth stressing about it because there's nothing you can do except your best."
