Rosberg tops in wet Barcelona

Wednesday 20th February 2008

Williams driver Nico Rosberg was way ahead of the pack on the opening day of testing in damp conditions at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.

Only eight drivers took part in testing, and Williams were the only team to put in a full day's work in difficult conditions, covering 787kms.

Rosberg completed 73 laps with a fastest time of 01:30.675 while his team-mate Kazuki Nakajima was next best with 01:32.370.

"The weather really hampered play today in Barcelona. Rosberg and Nakajima were in the cockpit for us and concentrated on set-up work and endurance runs so our running wasn't as adversely affected by the conditions as it perhaps was for others," said Dickie Stanford, Williams Test Team Manager.

Jarno Trulli was the only other driver to complete more than 50 laps. The Toyota driver finished sixth with a time of 01:33.283.

"Today was wet so it wasn't an ideal day for testing. We were concentrating on testing some new parts for our new aerodynamics package. We made reasonable progress and collected some useful data but it's still too early to figure anything out yet," Trulli said.

Renault duo Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet jr. finished fourth and seventh respectively with 01:32.820 and 01:40.073.

"It was an opportunity to try the car in the wet, but it was so slippery that we did not do many laps," said Alonso.

Ferrari and McLaren are set to join the action on Wednesday.
