'Red Bull need a bigger aero jump'

Friday 29th August 2008

Mark Webber reckons Red Bull need a bigger improvement to their car's aerodynamics if they hope to keep pace with Toyota and Renault.

With development on engines frozen this season, the main improvement that any team can make is to their car's aerodynamics.

And although Red Bull have been doing this throughout the season, Webber reckons rival teams Toyota and Renault have gotten the jump on them in recent weeks.

"Traditionally, I think with F1 cars a lot of the gains come from aero. During the season the cars don't change a huge amount chassis-wise," he told ITV.

"There are little gearbox things here and there but with the engine freeze allegedly going on at the moment it's hard to find improvements in that area.

"Aerodynamics is a huge window of opportunity for cars to be developed during course of the year. That's where this car has improved a lot from last year - as has everybody else's.

"In the last few races you've seen Renault and Toyota jump away from us and probably a lot of that is down to aero."

With six races remaining this season Red Bull are sixth in the Constructors' Championship on 24 points, 17 behind fourth-placed Toyota.
