Berger admits Alonso interest

Thursday 2nd October 2008

Formula One's newest race winners, Toro Rosso, have admitted an interest in signing Fernando Alonso - but concede it's unlikely to happen.

Alonso is out of contract with Renault at the end of this season with rumours linking him to a possible move to either BMW or Honda.

However, another team that would like to sign the double World Champion is Toro Rosso with co-owner Gerhard Berger admitting he would be keen on the idea but doubts that it would happen.

"Of course I am interested (in Alonso)," Berger told French sports daily newspaper L'Équipe, "but so is everybody else."

Personally, though, PF1 reckons if we had a choice between Toro Rosso and Honda we'd definitely take Toro Rosso.

"That is non-sense. Alonso is not a whiner, but he driven to be the best. His rift at McLaren was due to obvious prefernce for Hamilton. It makes sense that an English based team would pamper their own English boy. Wherever Alonso goes, he will make positive changes to the team. That's why everyone wants him. He works magic."

"Wherever Fernando ends up will not please him. Until he sits in a Ferrari he will always feel like he has been "short-changed". He would look good in red."

tttulio

"Well, If Alonso WOULD sign to ToroRosso, there would be a change in the way Dietrich Mateschitz distributes his money, we may even see him closing down some other motorsports commitments."
