Mike Gascoyne reckons Giancarlo Fisichella's performances for Force India this season have proven that he deserves his place in Formula One.
Fisi's time in the sport almost came to an end at the conclusion of last year's Championship when Renault failed to renew his contract. The Roman, though, soon signed up with Force India, raising some eyebrows around the paddock.
But despite now driving around the back of the field, Fisi has prove his determination, coming close to getting his VJM01 into Q2 on Saturday afternoons and even holding his Renault replacement, Nelson Piquet Jr, at bay in the last race in Bahrain.
"Fisi has shown that he's fully deserving of a place in F1," technical boss Gascoyne told SpeedTV.
"When he was in front of Nelson Piquet he probably had a little bit of an incentive to stay in front of him. He drove a superb race, and he's brought a lot to the team."
Gascoyne is now hoping that the team can reward Fisi by improving the car in time for next weekend's Spanish GP, which will see the introduction of new aerodynamic upgrades.
"We've got new bits. We've proved that we know what we're doing now, and the wind tunnel is producing good results," he said.
"We've got to be realistic, as everyone else is also moving forward. But I think we can have faith in what we're doing, and we've just got to keep pushing."
