Charles Leclerc and Ferrari made an excellent return to racing after the holidays, but the Monegasque driver admits the team still need to work on their race pace.

The Scuderia, who is still looking for the maiden win of the 2019 Formula 1 season, dominated the first Friday after the summer break as Sebastian Vettel was fastest in FP1 t Spa ahead of Leclerc while the roles were reversed for the second session.

Naturally Leclerc was delighted with Ferrari’s showing.

“After the holidays, a Friday like this is good,” he said. “It has been a positive day. Quali pace was strong, race pace a little bit less, so we need to work on the race pace, especially, for Sunday.”

Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas were eight tenths off the pace in the second session and the 21-year-old concedes that their main rivals will improve.

Asked if Mercedes can catch them in the race, he replied: “For sure! I’m pretty sure they will. The second sector, they are very, very strong, and tomorrow, once they turn up their engines, they won’t be that far [away] in the first sector, so they will be strong.”
