Gasly penalised, Perez moves up to P10

Pierre Gasly has been given a five-second time penalty by the stewards for an incident with Sergio Perez late on in Sunday’s British Grand Prix.

With the five seconds added on to his time, the Frenchman drops out of the points and down to P13 for the race.

That means Perez is pushed back up to P10, giving Force India a double points finish at their home grand prix for the third straight year.

Stoffel Vandoorne is now classified in P11, with Lance Stroll in P12, after the incident, which happened in the final moments at Silverstone.

“The Stewards reviewed video evidence, heard from the driver of car 10 (Pierre Gasly), the driver of car 11 (Sergio Perez) and the team representatives,” the statement said.

“The Stewards felt that Gasly’s manoeuvres were generally reasonable and that he was attempting to make a good racing pass. Perez left sufficient room throughout. However, Gasly touched the sausage kerb at the apex of Turn 16 which caused him to collide with Perez.

“This subsequently forced Perez off the track on driver’s left before Turn 17 and severely compounded his ability to race through Turns 17 and 18, and Gasly was thus able to pass Perez. The Stewards determined that Gasly was wholly or predominantly to blame, and while the collision was light it led directly to the pass.

“Therefore the Stewards ordered a 5 second penalty.”

The Toro Rosso man spoke before the decision was announced by the stewards, saying that he was not anticipating a penalty.

“For me it was a nice battle, I enjoyed it. I don’t think we should be making a big deal [of it],” Gasly said.

“When I went for it, I want expecting to touch him, but just with the tyre, everything, we touched a bit, but honestly it was really small.”
