Sebastian Vettel admits it was “my mistake” as he crashed into Max Verstappen at the British GP, robbing both drivers of a chance at the podium.

Vettel was running third at the British Grand Prix when Verstappen, who had the better pace on the day, drove up behind him and challenged for the podium.

The Red Bull driver overtook the Ferrari at Stowe corner with Vettel immediately trying to fight back.

Instead, he drove into the back of the RB15.

“It was my mistake,” he admitted.

“He past me into Stowe but then ran a bit wide which gave me the chance to come back.

“It looked for a second that he was going to the right and that there would be a gap to the left which I was going to go for but it didn’t open.

“By that time it was already too late and I was too close so I crash.”

Verstappen was spun but was able to continue while Vettel was forced to pit for a new front wing.

He was also handed a 10-second time penalty for the crash as well as two penalty points on his super licence bringing his tally to six.

A miserable day out at Silverstone ended with a P16 for the Ferrari driver.

Vettel, a lap down on race winner Lewis Hamilton, was left to rue what could have been.

“Today was really good,” he said, “I was really happy.

“We had some important moments at the beginning of the race then we benefitted from the Safety Car to pass cars in front.

“But I think it was quite tight between us and Red Bull and Max was quicker than us today in the first stint and again at the end of the race.

“Probably we should have finished fourth but we didn’t, I didn’t so can’t be happy with that.
