George Russell pleased with "small victories"

George Russell says he and his team have to be pleased with “small victories” given the situation they’re in.

The Williams driver qualified in P19 to secure a 21-0 winning qualifying record over his team-mate Robert Kubica this season, and is pleased with how close he was to the Alfa Romeos in front of him.

“It was good, prior to the weekend and after yesterday we were anticipating to be a second from the next car,” Russell said after the session.

“I think we ended up being three-tenths off the next car and one second from Q2 so you’ve got to take the small victories from today. I guess that is a small consolation in 21 qualifyings.”

Despite having a point less, Russell has been the dominant Williams driver all season, and will have Nicholas Latifi to contend with next season instead of Kubica.

“You have to take the small victories and be pleased that we did the maximum with the car,” he added.

“Tomorrow we will do our best, it is our last opportunity until next year.”

Russell’s qualifying whitewash matches the feat achieved by Fernando Alonso last season against Stoffel Vandoorne.
