Vital tow landed Bottas Azerbaijan pole

Valtteri Bottas believes a vital tow from Lando Norris' McLaren helped him claim pole for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Valtteri Bottas has credited his pole position in Baku to a vital tow he got on his final qualifying lap.

In a repeat of China, Bottas qualified on pole for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton completing a third front-row lockout for the team this season just 0.059s adrift.

The Finn was able to overhaul a deficit of 1.5s to Ferrari after FP3, but he believes that a powerful tow he received from Lando Norris’ McLaren was the deciding factor in his pole lap.

“I am really happy for pole, it is a nice feeling to get it on the last lap,” Bottas told reporters in Baku.

“It was a nice last lap and like I said Ferrari have been really strong. Obviously Charles is out with a mistake but as a team we did a really good job to be where we are now after such a difficult practice.

“It is all about small margins and I did get a good tow on that last lap. Of course, the corners I have to drive as well. It is all about small details and I managed to hit the sweet spot.”

“It was getting trickier and trickier and we are not supposed to race that late here but I got them to work somehow,” he explained.
