If you’re new to Formula 1, or simply want to brush up on your motor racing knowledge, PlanetF1.com have the answers to some of the most popular F1 questions surrounding grand prix motor racing.

How fast can Formula 1 cars go?

Formula 1 cars can reach top speeds of around 230mph. The highest speed ever recorded in an F1 race was achieved by Valtteri Bottas in 2016 when he reached 231.4mph (351.7km/h) at the Mexican Grand Prix while driving for Mercedes.

The circuit in Mexico City is known for producing some of the highest speeds on the grand prix calendar due to its high altitude, making it easier for cars to cut through the thinner air, while Monza in Italy, known as the ‘Temple of Speed’, produces the highest average speed over the course of a full lap of any F1 circuit.

In general, Formula 1 cars can regularly reach over 200mph at top speed in races.

How much does a Formula 1 car cost?

There is no definitive price tag for a Formula 1 car, but according to Red Bull, grand prix racing cars are worth between $12-16 million USD, making it an expensive sport for team owners, particularly when the car crashes!

For the 2023 season, Formula 1 teams were permitted to spend a maximum of $135 million (£109m) on materials and activities relating to the car’s performance. This includes anything from transportation costs, spare parts, team expenses, and excludes driver’s salaries and engine costs.

How much do F1 car components cost?

The engine is the most expensive part of a Formula 1 car, and each team is only allowed to use limited numbers of engine components per season – incurring penalties for any parts taken beyond what they are allowed.

The full turbo-charged 1.6-litre V6 power unit in the cars is worth around $10.5 million (£8.1m), while the chassis costs around $700,000 and the gearbox around $400,000 to manufacture. These are commonly the three most expensive components of the F1 car.

Elsewhere, parts like the Halo, a titanium structure above the car’s cockpit which protects the drivers from flying debris, is estimated to cost around $17,000 while a set of F1 tyres will set the teams back by around $2,700. During a grand prix weekend, the F1 team will require 13 tyre sets per driver – a combined value of $35,000 per driver, per race, adding up to as much as $16.1m across the whole grid for the 23-race season on tyres alone.

How much does a Formula 1 car weigh?

Formula 1 cars have strict weight limits the teams must follow. For 2023, the minimum weight of a Formula 1 car, which is set by the FIA in their rulebook, was 798kg (1,759 lbs).

Originally the limit was 795kg, but it was increased by 3kg as teams struggled to meet the requirements due to factors such as heavier tyres and new mandated electronic items in the car. The stipulated weight includes the mass of the car with the driver and fitted with dry-weather tyres, but without fuel.

How much horsepower does a Formula 1 car have?

Horsepower (hp) is a unit measurement for the rate at which the work of an engine or motor is done. One mechanical horsepower is equivalent to the energy required to lift 550 pounds (250kg) by one foot in one second.

The current 1.6L V6 turbocharged engines featured in the Formula 1 cars, along with their electrical units, can produce around 1050 horsepower, which is sufficient enough to reach speeds in excess of 225mph (360 km/h), and such is the power of the engine and brakes, F1 cars can accelerate from 0-100mph and then stop completely in around five seconds.

Why do Formula 1 cars spark?

Sparks have been part of Formula 1 since the 1980s, with teams running their cars as low to the ground as possible to create more downforce. F1 cars have skid blocks underneath them made of titanium which produce the sparks we see at the tracks.

When the car is driving at high speeds, it gets pressed down onto the track from aerodynamic forces. The skid blocks are designed to protect the part of the floor of the car made up of wooden planks when it is pressed onto the track. The floor of the car scrapes along the track and creates the sparks behind the car as it drives.

The arrival of ground effect aerodynamics in 2022 saw the return of ‘porpoising’ to the sport, where the cars ‘bounced’ on the track surface through the floors of the cars being effectively dragged down towards the asphalt at speed as they generate downforce. This saw even more sparks fly than before, but caused plenty of headaches for the drivers worst affected.

Are Formula 1 cars electric?

Formula 1 cars are not fully electric. The racing cars of today are driving at high speeds of around 200mph, and we currently don’t have the technology available for a battery powered engine supply to sustain 200 miles straight away without needing to recharge.

While F1 cars have been hybrid – a mixture of petrol and electric power – since 2014, the chances of seeing an electric Formula 1 car on our screens any time soon are slim, and the sport plans on continuing using internal combustion engines at the next regulation change in 2026 – with the cars set to run on sustainable synthetic fuel instead.

Are Formula 1 cars manual?

No, Formula 1 cars are not manual. They come with semi-automatic gearboxes which allow for quick gear shifts at high speeds during grand prix races. The semi-automatic gearbox is designed to use a combination of electronic and mechanical systems to change gears.

The gears are operated using paddles located on the steering wheel. The gear changing process takes less than 100 milliseconds and it is the fastest option for gear shifting in Formula 1 racing, reducing physical strain on the driver.

Do Formula 1 cars have a clutch?

Yes, Formula 1 cars have a clutch located between the engine and the gearbox, helping to transmit the huge amounts of power from one component to the other. The clutch is extremely small, weighing less than 1.5kg, and it is capable of withstanding temperatures up to 500 degrees.

It is built by two different manufacturers – AP Racing and Sachs. The clutch uses carbon plates and is electro-hydraulically operated, meaning a computer matches the revs and gears when a driver decides to change gear.
